Most folks have a full refrigerator after Thanksgiving and ours is no exception. We have turkey and ham and dressing and two kinds of pie plus vegetables and cranberry sauce. The day was wonderful with all three sons gathering at middle son’s home in Houston along with my new daughter-in-law, a girlfriend and her sister’s family, dogs, and neighbors. My oldest son organized the food prep and mostly what I did was watch.
Sampling the leftovers brings to mind that happy day. And of course, I don’t have to cook anything or wonder what to have for a meal.
My artwork proceeds in a similar fashion. I’ve been working on a series of portraits of Hondurans. I select the background, the fabrics, the photo, and threads. All the bits and pieces are saved in a ziplock bag—just in case I might need to alter the position of a hand or add a bit to a dress here or there. When the piece is completed, I work with the leftovers to create a smaller piece.
La Mujer is 12 inches by 20 inches and mounted on stretcher bars over black linen.
El Vaquero is 4 inches by 7 inches and is presented as a post-card sized piece.
And in yesterday’s mail was the color proof of my ad that is appearing in American Style in February 09.
